Visitor Studies Officer (until April 2010)/ Audience Research Officer (from April 2010)
Audience Research (formerly 'Visitor Studies') is a key part of the Learning & Programmes Department in looking at the needs and expectations of users and to improve the visitor experience. As Audience Research Officer, Jenni was responsible for developing a programme of research into visitor learning through consultation and evaluation before, during and after exhibitions, gallery developments and other projects. Jenni worked across departments and sites, and liaised closely with the Marketing and Communications Department on a museum-wide approach to visitor research and audience development. During the Royal Museum Project - the major redevelopment project for the former Royal Museum, now part of the National Museum of Scotland, Jenni took forward the consultation and evaluation action plan. In particular, she led a series of focus groups over a three year period, consulting on various aspects of the project with a large variety of visitors.
Responsibilities of the Audience Research Officer included:
- undertaking and commissioning research into visitor learning
- communicating findings in visitor learning and behaviour
- advising/ assisting in the development of evaluation methods for projects and exhibitions
- organizing training
- co-ordinating and handling requests from members of the public wishing to carry out independent visitor research at any of the National Museums Scotland sites
- maintaining links with external visitor studies partners
- representing National Museums Scotland on the UK Visitor Studies Group

Social Media Officer
Jenni was selected by the Director of Public Programmes to do a secondment (one day a week) with the Digital Media Team based on her enthusiasm for social media. In this role, she had the following responsibilities:
- Sourcing information about social/digital media from the sector & collating examples of good practice
- Understanding more about online audiences and assisting press with audit of our social media footprint
- Assisting the Head of Digital Media in taking forward the overall social media strategy and writing the Flickr strategy
- Producing an overall photography policy for NMS (collated from the different NMS sites)
- Launching NMS onto Flickr, including setting up a profile, sourcing images for the photostream, setting up groups for each museum site, building relevant contacts and driving traffic to the groups
- Producing Flickr guides (e.g. 'What is Flickr' and 'How to get started on Flickr') for the NMS website
- Setting up guidelines and training for staff to manage the NMS Flickr profile and groups, and introducing 'virtual volunteers' to assist with moderating groups
- Running the 'SnapScot 2009' Flickr pilot project, which included an on site event as part of the Homecoming Scotland Finale event

Learning & Programmes Officer
Jenni had responsibility for 3 key areas: family Sunday events; development of interactive zones for schools & families; and the adult learning programme. The focus was on developing and managing programmes, including liason with marketing, visitors services and curatorial colleagues. Jenni also completed an audit of the National Museums Scotland adult learning provision, helped to develop a new planning framework for events programming, and advised Learning and Programmes colleagues on evaluation issues.

Freelance Museum Consultant
Jenni carried out two major visitor learning studies for National Museums Scotland:
- Communicate! Gallery
- Cats…the Ultimate Predators
including focus groups, gallery observation, surveys, analysis of data, presentation, final written reports. She also prepared an evaluation strategy for a major grant application.
Smithsonian Institution, Centre for Folklife and Cultural Heritage
June – August 2003
Intern
Jenni conducted qualitative research at the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival and worked in the exhibition Scotland at the Smithsonian. The research included analyzing and evaluating data, evaluating the learning opportunities for families at the Festival and making recommendations.

Jenni's responsibilities included assisting with the major living exhibition Masters of the Building Arts at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, specifically helping to co-ordinate hands-on activities in the family area; Assisting with revising an oral history guide for schools; Carrying out research on Welsh culture for a future exhibition.
